“Is That Your Real Hair?”

The amount of time I get asked this question is ridiculous. It’s as if a black girl can’t have super defined curly hair.

Society has made us think that all black hair is “nappy” or “unkempt”. It’s been branded and programmed into our minds to be shocked when someone has beautiful curly hair, as if all natural hair isn’t beautiful. Anything past a 3C curl isn’t beautiful according to the societal norm. It pains me more because it get asked this question the most by black people. I expect this sort of thing by non people of colour but alas.

We were always told we would never be as good as white folk, or that to be black is a “sin.” We were made to see ourselves as less than. We’ve began to reclaim our beauty back and live by our own standards but there are still those that don’t want to embrace it or are choosing to be ignorant and that’s okay. The world will begin to accept us and the many different kinks in our hair.

I vote that we stop asking the question “Is that your real hair.” As if we can’t grow beautiful hair ourselves.
